Climate Smart Healthcare

Recognizing that not all health professionals feel comfortable advocating for state or federal climate policy solutions, Climate Smart Healthcare provides a framework for decarbonizing the healthcare sector, which contributes to roughly 8.5% of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions.

According to our partner organization Healthcare Without Harm, Climate Smart Healthcare is "low emissions, resilient health care and provides a three pillar framework for health sector climate engagement to focus on: mitigation, resilience, and leadership.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Health Sector Climate Pledge calls on healthcare facilities to reduce scope 1-2 emissions (direct/indirect) by 50% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.  Per the pledge goal, the Joint Commission offers a Sustainable Healthcare Certification for facilities that implement an action plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from three sources of their choosing.

As a network â€‹of health professionals, MiCCA aims to serve as a resource hub to support clinician-led advocacy to reduce healthcare emissions across Michigan's major hospital systems. If you're interested in CSHC facilitation, please contact teresa@michigancca.com to learn more about how to get involved.

MiCCA's 2nd Annual
Climate & Health Conference

Nov. 15 2025: Around 100 people gathered in Grand Rapids for our 2nd annual event focused on Climate Smart Healthcare. Our keynote speaker, Aparna Bole MD, previously served as a senior consultant to the HHS office of climate and health. We also heard perspectives from the Michigan Hospital Administration, clinicians leading CSHC implementation, hospital supply chain officials, and many more, along with students who presented their climate-health research during our poster exhibit.

See our agenda from 2025, and we look forward to seeing you next year for our 3rd annual event! â€‹

Our Campaign

Our CHSC work is focused on empowering Michigan practitioners to form climate leadership teams to challenge their healthcare institutions and achieve outlined climate mitigation and preparedness goals.

We are also developing an internal committee representing different Michigan health providers to better understand the current sustainability goals and networks within hospital systems and identify priority areas for improvement. Check out our initial resource guide below and stay tuned for more on CSHC from MiCCA.
