A Tour Around Michigan

A SUCCESSFUL TOUR!

Thank YOU for showing up and for your support!

Five events, 170 attendees, and countless thoughtful conversations.

Thank you to everyone who turned out in Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, and Mount Pleasant! A special thank you to our visiting guest of honor, Dr. Debra Hendrickson, who traveled to Michigan all the way from Reno, Nevada to share her words of wisdom.

The stories she shared from her book, The Air They Breathe, were moving, and at times, difficult to hear, but her call-to-action on behalf of our children and future generations was resonant.

If you weren’t able to make it to any of the book tour events, I highly encourage you to watch Dr. Hendrickson’s presentation from Traverse City, posted on our YouTube channel. Her talk is followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Mark Elliot, a retired cardiologist, Dr. Lisa Franseen, a clinical psychologist, and MiCCA’s founder, Dr. Lisa Del Buono.

I also sat down with Dr. Hendrickson for an interview on how health practitioners can get involved with climate advocacy, how to deal with news fatigue, and whether we need a new paradigm for understanding increasingly-common "unprecedented" events. You can watch that discussion here.

We concluded our tour in Lansing with our advocacy day, where 20 MiCCA members met with more than 19 state lawmakers to discuss how transitioning to clean energy offers immediate and local public health benefits. Here’s our one-pager that outlines our messaging from the day, which we encourage you to share across your networks and with your representatives.

This was MiCCA’s first time organizing an advocacy day, and we were gratified with the connections made and nuanced discussions through the whole day. I appreciated the spirited enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of everyone who participated.

Special thank you to Mia McPherson, Dr. Alex Rabin, Dr. Matt Messana, and Dr. Hendrickson, along with Rep. Donavan McKinney and Rep. Matt Longjohn for participating in a press conference that was picked up by MIRS News, which goes out to Michigan government employees.

In times of political upheaval, connecting in-person with you all and the general public was inspiring. I hope that we’re able to bring in more speakers like Dr. Hendrickson and organize more advocacy days in the future.

If any of this resonates with you, please consider donating to MiCCA and invite your health professional friends to join MiCCA, so that we can continue to promote our health expertise to inform the public and decision-makers.

Thank you,Teresa

Advocacy Day in Lansing

We had 19 meetings scheduled with state legislators, who sit on the House and Senate energy committees, and we also dropped by our own reps' offices to share why we support clean energy as a health solution.

Thank you Michigan Environmental Council for allowing us to use their space. Thank YOU for showing up to advocate with us.
